One wedding and a funeral

Clara went to her first wedding this weekend in Whistler, British Columbia. Our friends Mike and Jen had a beautiful wedding, officiated by our very own Greg! Clara and I, however, missed the first half of the wedding because Clara was trying to nurse down for a nap in the bathroom. I thought she would sleep through the entire ceremony, but as soon as we got outside, she heard dad's voice, and her eyes popped open. Expressing her delight in a high-pitched squeal that meant she assumed this gathering was a special party just for her, we watched from the wings as Mike and Jen exchanged rings and recited tear-choked vows. It was a lovely wedding, made even lovelier by the attendance of our friends Esther and Emmett who came up from San Francisco for the happy occasion.
Our first day back in Seattle was met with the unhappy news that Clara's great-grandfather Bob Hazen had died. Bob had struggled with dementia and hearing loss, especially after Bobbie died, but we will remember him as a devoted husband and caretaker to Bobbie, an avid golfer who could best players half his age, and as a proud Portlander who was All-City Yell King at Grant High School, host of "The Hot Canary" radio show, and who helped start the Rose Parade. We'll miss you, Bob.

Thanks, Coleen. We trust Papa is in a better place, that great big golf course in the sky, hitting well under par.
